In March 1860, war again broke out between Great Britain and France on one side and China on the other.
When the British & French forces occupied Chusan, an agreement to that effect was signed on the 2nd April 1860, but with the exclusion of peace, the island was evacuated (10th January 1861). A new Convention was then drawn up with reference to the non-cession of Chusan to any foreign power.
Inasmuch as the Treaty of 1858 was ratified & confirmed, with modifications, by the Treaty of the 24th October 1860, I conclude that the Convention of the 4th April 1845 is still abiding.
